Tree contaminated by radiation, 1988
Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. During the Great Patriotic War, German Nazis used the tree in the shape of a cross (in pic) as a gallows to hang Soviet partisans. Following the Chernobyl accident, the woods where the tree grows was contaminated with radioactivity and cut down. However, the cross-shaped tree survived thanks to the efforts of people who wouldn't let this living memorial to killed patriots be cut down. (Photo TASS / file image / Valery Zufarov)
