Royal Air Force - Hawker Siddeley Nimrod R.1 XV249, of no.51 Squadron at RAF Wyton. A replacement R.1 modified for use as Electronic and Signals Intelligence gathering aircraft, to replace XW666, which crashed. With highly specialised electronic surveillance equipment the Nimrod R.1s were extensively used to gather intelligence form the former Warsaw Pact countries, flying over the Baltic sea and arctic seas, as well as hot-spots worldwide
