Captain Langsdorff, Commander of the Graf Spee battleship, badly damaged by three British light cruisers during the Battle of the River Plate, South Atlantic, 13 December 1939, WW2 - unable to arrange the necessary repairs in Montevideo harbour, Langsdorff was forced to scuttle the ship on Hitler's orders on 17 December. He committed suicide two days later
