Cartoon, Colonel Sellers
Cartoon, Colonel Sellers. An adverse comment on a play based on a novel by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner, The Gilded Age, satirising corruption and greed in post-Civil War America. In this imaginary courtroom scene, the man in the dock resembles the American actor John T Raymond (1836-1887), who performed in the title role. The judge in the background is John Hollingshead (1827-1904), at this time manager of the Gaiety Theatre. As judge, he doesn't seem to think very much of the play
