General Sir Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington) fording the River Kaitna, Battle of Assaye, western India, 23 September 1803, between the Maratha Empire and the British East India Company, during the Second Anglo-Maratha War (1803-1805). At around 15:00, the British crossed to the northern bank of the Kaitna unopposed apart from a distant harassing fire from the Maratha cannon which was largely inaccurate but succeeded in decapitating Wellesley's dragoon orderly as shown in this illustration
