Meeting of King William III and the Duke of Berwick at the Battle of Landen or Neerwinden, in the Spanish Netherlands (present-day Belgium), 29 July 1693, part of the Nine Years War (1688-1697). James FitzJames, 1st Duke of Berwick, was the illegitimate son of the deposed King James II, fighting on the side of the French against English, Spanish and Dutch forces. He was taken prisoner during the battle, and was briefly presented to the king, during which they raised their hats to each other
