George Grossmith (1847-1912) was an English comedian, writer, composer, actor, and singer. He was famous for performing his own comic piano sketches and songs, including this one, which he wrote in 1886, and which is still known today. A couple are depicted dancing the polka -- the man looks very much like Grossmith himself
