Prince Eugene of Savoy, Austrian Habsburg field marshal, wounded at the Battle of Malplaquet, Artois, northern France, 11 September 1709, part of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). He was struck by a musket ball behind the ear, but ignored it and carried on fighting
