How He Died! The Death of the Prince Imperial

Illustration giving an impression of the final moments of Louis Napoleon, the Prince Imperial (1856-1879). The Prince Imperial of France was an impetuous and impulsive young man and had insisted on fighting in the Zulu war, after attending the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. He had been given orders to observe the fighting, not to take part, but his desire for military glory took him into dangerous situations and this one proved fatal. While on reconnaissance duty he took charge of the patrol, ordering the party to off-saddle at an apparently deserted kraal. They were ambushed by over 40 Zulus. Along with three others, the Prince was killed on 1st June 1879, aged only 23. Melton Prior, special artist for the ILN during the Zulu War, was among the party who discovered the Prince's body the following day
