The ball, founded by Lady Howard de Walden in 1925, was the highlight of the debutante's first Season. Girls would attend dressed in white ball dresses and a number would be chosen to wheel in a huge cake, which would be cut by the guest of honour, usually a member of the peerage or royal family. The ball's inspiration came from the days of George III when his consort, Queen Charlotte, liked to have her ladies-in-waiting in attendance on her birthday. The ball also raised funds for various charities
