Debutante ephemera - Queen Charlotte's Ball

Queen Charlotte's Ball programme, page 3. Page 3 of a programme for Queen Charlotte's Ball, 1952 listing the maids of honour - society girls who took part in the historic cake ceremony. The ball, founded by Lady Howard de Walden in 1925, was the highlight of the debutante's first Season. Girls would attend dressed in white ball dresses and a number would be chosen to wheel in a huge cake, which would be cut by the guest of honour, usually a member of the peerage or royal family. The ball's inspiration came from the days of George III when his consort, Queen Charlotte, liked to have her ladies-in-waiting in attendance on her birthday. The ball also raised funds for various charities
