Deed of conveyance of slaves in the United States, 1859
A deed of conveyance of slaves (right), which was issued on 1st November 1859in New Orleans. In the deed which was certified by the notary Michael Hahn it is noted that Uriah H. Dudley sells to Peter Wahl the approximately 33 year old black person named Mercury. The slave has already changed the owner in 1853. The deed it is laid down that Mercury will remain a slave for life. Also, in the bottom paragraph on the right side it is specified that there is no guarantee for the character and health of the slave. On the left side one can see a contract between spouses, in which the wife relinquishes all rights to the husband
