Description | 'Saying what they think of treason at home' |
Details |
Irish soldiers are depicted fighting on the Western front during the First World War, leaving their trenches and charging the enemy. The illustration was published shortly after the Easter Rising of April 1916, where Irish nationalist rebels rose in Dublin and were forcibly put down by British troops. The heroism of those Irish loyal to the Empire during the war and their disgust for the 'traitors,' back home is emphasised here by the Illustrated London News.
