Description | 'The Glorious Stand of the Royal West Kents in Trones Wood' |
Details |
Small group of the Royal West Kent regiment repelling German attacks in Trones Wood, France. The soldiers are reported to have been separated from their main force during a night attack on German lines in July 1916. They found themselves surrounded but resisted continuous attacks throughout the night until relief arrived early the next morning. The Illustrated London News at the time quoted a message from British Headquarters in France, which described the episode as 'reminiscent of Rorke's Drift.'
