Details |
Aerial view of the wreck of HMS Vindictive in Ostend Harbour, Belgium, during the First World War. HMS Vindictive, an Arrogant-class protected cruiser, was launched in 1897, served throughout the war, was fitted out for the Zeebrugge Raid and took part in fierce action on 23 April, when her upperworks were badly damaged by gunfire. She was sunk as a blockship at Ostend during the Second Ostend Raid on 10 May 1918. The Zeebrugge and Ostend Raids gave the ship celebrity, and her bow section has been preserved in Ostend harbour as a lasting memorial.
