Belgian priest reading Cardinal Mercier's protest against deportations to his congregation, whilst a German soldier stands guard at the bottom of his pulpit, 1916. At that time German forces in Belgium were deporting large numbers of 'unemployed' civilians to Germany to work for German industry.
