This intriguing image entitled, 'The sieve in the wall: in the casual ward', shows a 'casual', or a man who receives temporary relief in a workhouse that is not his own parish shovelling stones he has broken through the grille of his 'cell' or the space adjoining the room he sleeps in. In order to earn his keep he has to break rocks into pieces small enough fit through the grill.
