Description | A 'Dandy' Slave in Baltimore, Maryland 1861 |
Details |
Well dressed slave in top hat and top coat, holding an umbrella over his mistress. A typical scene from pre-Civil War Southern America. The black servant was the property of his mistress and the accompanying text made it clear that he was contented but did not regard his wages as his own, returning at least half to his mistress.
