Funeral procession of poor barefoot peasants behind a horse and cart. Beside the simple coffin is an elderly bereaved woman head bent in misery. Many premature deaths were brought on by the potato famine in the mid 19th century and further compounded by the forced evictions of poverty-stricken peasants from their homes and farms. The rocky desolate landscape echoes the sadness of the scene.
