Description | A holocaust for horses, 1917. |
Details |
The devastation that a single shell could wreak is bleakly summarised in this drawing by Frank Dadd, entitled 'Wiped out by a single shell: a holocaust of horses in the danger zone.' The image was reproduced in The Graphic in June 1917, accompanied by this extract from a machine gun officer's diary, 'A little way up the road we came upon a General Service waggon, with a team of horses lying dead beside it. A shell had exploded in the midst of them, killing the lot at once.
