Description | A london night shelter for men |
Details |
This illustration entitled - In the abyss - shows the mass misery of the destitute in a London night shelter at Medland Hall in Ratcliff Highway. Night after night 300 sleeping boxes, resembling coffins are filled with London's outcasts. It was the only night shelter where men, regardless of their creed, merit or nationality, were given bread and a night's lodging without charge or the imposition of any task. The Hall was worked by the London Congregational Union and until this sketch had helped 3,500,000 men.
