Description | A model dairy farm at Carlton House Terrace, WW1 |
Details |
A dairying and haymaking scene, somewhat incongruously in the back garden of Lord and Lady Cowdray's London Home in Carlton House Terrace in central London, one of the capital's smartest addresses and a stone's throw from Pall Mall. There at No. 16, Lord and Lady Cowdray had established a model farm where girls were taught haymaking, milking and butter-making and the management of horses with a view to the employment of women on the land to release agricultural labourers for military service. The scheme was organised by the National Political League Land Council, which was raising funds for the mobilisation of women for agricultural labour.
