Picnic scene showing a large party enjoying a picnic in a clearing near a river. The Victorians popularised the picnic, making it into a fashionable social occasion and invariably a lavish feast prepared by an army of servants. The scene here shows merriment with various couples in romantic engagements, and people reading, playing, drinking or gossiping.
