High' Explosive'~~~~Caption: Giving the Germans the Bird: A substitute for the shell lachrymatory and the bomb malodorous - a pheasant from home. ~~~~Parcels from home were eagerly awaited, especially food parcels, which provided a welcome diversion from the monotony of army rations. Although parcels could arrive at the Front within as little as four days, others might take weeks as in the case of this pheasant, which is instead fired from a gun as a worthy alternative to shell fire. Bert Thomas used the same joke a month later in The Bystander, but instead the soldier used his Aunt Matilda's Xmas pudding! E. H. Shepard is best known for his charming illustrations for A. A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh and Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows, but is most prolific work was for Punch. He also produced a number of pictures for The Sketch during World War I, despite a commission in the Royal Artillery. He was in the battles of the Somme, Arras and Ypres and ended the war serving as Major Shepard MC in Italy.
