In Zanzibar, British naval officers pull alongside a dhow suspected of illegally carrying slaves, in order to examine the papers of the dhow's owner. A blockade was in place on the East coast of Africa, patrolled by the British and German navies, in order to suppress the slave trade and prevent the import of guns.
