Description | A View up the Great Beardmore Glacier |
Details |
A view on the Great Beardmore Glacier up which Captain Scott ascended to the plateau during December 1911 on his ill-fated expedition to the South Pole. The picture actually shows the Shackleton camp under the Granite pillar half a mile from that expedition's lower glacier deposit. The view gives a good idea of the sheer cliffs which are characteristic of South Victoria Land mountains. These pictures were published in The Sphere long before the public had knowledge of the fate of Captain Scott and his team.
