Photograph showing the Cathedral in Aachen, Germany, after fighting between the German and Allied armies, October 1944. Fortunately Aachen Cathedral survived the battle largely intact. Adolf Hitler, the German Fuhrer, gave the order that there should be 'no surrender' in Aachen, making the battle that raged there particularly brutal and destructive.
