Abd El Kader (Abd al-Qadir, El Amir Abdelkader)(1808-1883), Algerian Islamic scholar, Sufi, political and military leader who led a resistance to French occupation in the mid-nineteenth century. He was eventually defeated, went into exile, and led a religious life.
