Details

Air Commodore Dame Nancy Marie Salmon (1903-1999), sometimes known by her married name, Dame Nancy Snagge. She was a British women's royal air force leader during World War II and was named Director of the Women's Royal Air Force in 1950, remaining in that post until her retirement in 1956. She also acted as A.D.C to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Shejoined the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1938, and the W.A.A.F. on its inception in March, 1939. She trained as an M.T. driver, was commissioned and at the outbreak of war became officer in charge of the W.A.A.F. personnel at No. 3 Balloon Centre. In 1946, she was awarded the O.B.E. for her work in No. 60 Group, and as Deputy Director helped in framing the peacetime regulations which brought about the full integration of a women's auxiliary service with one of the Armed Forces. The only daughter of Mr H. T. Salmon and Mrs Marion Salmon, her favourite recreations, according to The Tatler, were fishing, reading and a game of golf.
