Alexander III, Tsar of Russia (1845 - 1894). He was the younger son of Tsar Alexander II and became heir with the death of his elder brother, Nicholas. He married Princess Dagmar of Denmark (sister of Queen Alexandra) in 1866 who became Empress Maria Fedorovna. He followed a repressive domestic policy, especially in the persecution of the Jews, and promoted Russian language, traditions and the Orthodox Church. Despite several assassination attempts he died a natural death and was succeeded by his son, Nicholas II.
