An engraving of Alice Ayres, the heroine of a tragic fire in Borough on 24th April 1885 in which she rescued two young children which she dropped from an upper floor window onto a mattress she had forced out of the window. A third child died whilst a similar attempt was made and Ayres herself also perished in her escape attempt as her jump failed to meet the mat.
