Mrs Sarah Palfrey Fabyan, Jean Borotra and Alice Marble pictured at Roehampton Club in 1938. Alice Marble (1913 - 1990), American tennis player was the first woman to win both the US Open and Wimbledon singles titles in the same year, as well as the ladies' doubles and mixed doubles. She also pioneered the wearing of shorts for tennis, first in 1932 and in 1950, spoke out supporting the black tennis player, Althea Gibson and encouraging the public to accept black and homosexual tennis players into the game. Jean Borotra (1898-1994), was a French tennis player known as the 'Bounding Basque', known for his athleticism on the court and his signature beret.
