Engraving showing Police and bailiffs enforcing an eviction at Glenbeigh in County Kerry, Ireland, 1887. During the 19th century agricultural depression in Ireland many tenants were evicted and faced complete poverty. Those who could emigrated, those who reained faced death or resorted to violence to oppose absentee landlords. Only five percent of Southern Ireland was owned by the Irish.
