Armenian genocide. A trench dug for the bodies of victims of the massacre of Armenian Christians at Erzeroum (Erzerum) by Turkish troops. The massacres were the result of an attempt by Sultan Abdul Hamid II to reinforce the territorial integrity of the embattled Ottoman Empire and re-assert Pan-Islamism as a state ideology. The massacre in Erzerum began when the priest of Tevik was shot by Turkish soldiers when he and other Armenians were at the Serai (the chief government building in Erzerum
