Details |
Louis Philippe of France (1773 - 1850) on his arrival at Croydon railway station following the French Revolution of 1848. The son of the Duc d'Orleans, he renounced his titles following the Revolution of 1789 but was eventually elected to the throne in 1830, thereafter known as the 'Citizen King'. France prospered under his rule, but he was eventually forced into repressive actions against newspapers and the judicial system following several uprisings and assassination attempts. He abdicated in 1848 and travelled to England under the pseudonym of 'Mr Smith'.
