Arthur Phillip, Vice-Admiral and Governor of New South Wales (formerly Captain Phillip, R.N.) (1738-1814). In January 1788, Phillip instituted a tiny settlement on the shores of Port Jackson, where now stands the city of Sydney. Phillip was originally sent to Australia to establish a Penal Station (Colony).
