Description Artificial limbs for soldiers maimed in WWI

Diagram showing a montage of three different types of artificial limbs available to wounded soldiers in World War One. Artificial leg, controled with external elastic string from the knee to the ankle-joint. The Blatchford leg, foot is provided with a felt flexible toe. The hanger foot, has a central ankle-pivot with a rubber cushion under the heel and instep. It was estimated that a total of one million men lost limbs during World War One.
