Picture No 10610823
Date 1939
Description Au Revoir to Jack and Jill 1939
Details

A somewhat contrived imaginary scene, depicting gunners waving goodbye to 'Jack and Jill', horses that once played a far more intrinsic role in warfare, as they travel off in caterpillar tractor to 'face the dangers of the barrage'. Horses were still used during World War Two but in a limited capacity, usually for short-distance work, often over difficult terrain.
