Bathing and washing in Ancient Rome. Men and boys using 'strigiles' in a bath house. The strigil was a small, curved, metal tool used in ancient Greece and Rome to scrape dirt and sweat from the body before the invention of soap. Perfumed oil was first applied to the skin, and then the strigil was used to scrape the oil off, taking the dirt with it.
