Description | Belgian soldiers retreat |
Details |
Belgian soldiers in August 1914, retreating to Antwerp, accompanied by dogs pulling machine guns. As the Germans pushed their invasion through Belgium, the Belgium army was forced to retreat. The dog-pulled artillery however, proved to be an advantage in the field of battle, being nimble and manouevrable, with the dogs lying quietly behind the guns once they were in position. The Germans, who tended to advance in close formation, suffered great losses as a consequence.
