Description | Benfleet Creek during the winter of 1947 |
Details |
Benfleet Creek in Essex, haunt of motor boat enthusiasts and summer bathing belles wears a forbidding aspect during the big freeze of 1947. The picture shows many hundreds of pleasure craft lying frozen at their moorings. During one of the harshest winters on record in Britain, temperatures in many parts of England were the lowest since the intense cold spell of February 1929. The temperature actually dropped at times to 14 degrees below freezing point and road and water transport in many parts of the country were dislocated.
