Description | Bringing in the cake at Queen Charlotte's Ball, 1959 |
Details |
Beaming debutantes in their traditional dresses of virginal white, wheel in a huge cake onto the ballroom dance floor at the Grosvenor House Hotel during Queen Charlotte's Ball. The ball, which was founded in 1925 by Lady Howard de Walden became the focal event of the Season after the end of court presentations in 1958. The ball raised money for Queen Charlotte's maternity hospital and the huge cake was based on that traditionally brought out by the maids-of-honour for Queen Charlotte. The number of candles represented the number of years since the Queen's birth.
