Picture No 10731433
Date 1914
Description British sentries at railway tunnels at the start of WWI
Details

Once Germany had declared war on Russia, war with France was certain to follow, with the possibility that Great Britain could be forced into the conflict too. The British government therefore took every precaution in view of possible eventualities: it was believed that German spies may attempt to paralyze railway communications so sentries were placed on guard at all bridges and tunnels on important railway lines.
