Description | British troops in one of the Aisne quarries, 1914 |
Details |
British troops resting in a disused quarry cave in the Aisne district of France. 'Most of the men when not actually in the trenches sleep and rest in these caves; they also form a mess-room for the officers. The floors are strewn with straw to give warmth ... they also served as distribution centres; ammunition, food and water could be stored here.'
