German soldiers, armed with flame throwers, or flammenwerfers attack a British trench with sprays of liquid fire. According to a military correspondent, many of the men were overwhelmed with the heat and with burns to their faces and bodies. Eventually, a machine gunner was able to get his Lewis gun going and brought down several of the approaching Germans enabling the British to fire.
