Front cover of The Bystander magazine featuring a portrait of Queen Amelie of Portugal. (1865-1951), last queen of Portugal and wife of King Carlos I. Born Amelia of Orleans. Featured at the time of a republican revolution that ousted her younger son from the throne and into exile, The Bystander call her, Queen of Sorrows, alluding not only to the misfortune of her son, but also to the fact her husband and elder son were assassinated in Lisbon in 1908.
