Description | Caedmon leaving a feast |
Details |
Caedmon is the first named English poet. This illutration depicts how he started writing poetry. He worked as a herdsman at Whitby Abbey and when the servant had feasts they used to pass around an instrument and everyone would play it. Here he is leaving because he does not know how to play or sing. That night, he had a dream in which someone asked him to sing, Caedmon wrote a short poem praising God. He went on to join the monastry and write many poems.
