Captain Frederick Burnaby (1842 - 1885), English soldier and explorer, travelling, with a companion, across the Russian Steppes in the winter of 1875. Upon his return from Khiva (now Uzbekistan) he wrote a best-selling account of his travels, which enthralled the British public.
