Caratacus (born circa 10 AD - died after circa 50AD) - 1st-century AD British chieftain of the Catuvellauni tribe. Active in the resistance to the Roman conquest of Britain. Captured and sentenced to death he made an empassioned speech before his execution, persuading Emperor Claudius to spare his life. Statue by John Henry Foley (1818–1874.)
