The late Cardinal Newman, lying in state in the chapel of the Oratory, Birmingham. John Henry Newman (1801-1890) converted to Catholicism in October 1845 and became a cardinal in May 1879. His writings both before and after his conversion made him one of the most influential theological thinkers of his time.
